ORIGIN OF GRANT TOWNSHIP December 20, 2008, 8:20 pm
Grant Township is a small agricultural community located in southern Newaygo County, and serves as a bedroom community for commuters who work in Grand Rapids.
It was the 11th township organized in Newaygo County. Samuel Glover was elected supervisor at the first township meeting held in April 1867, in the home of Stephen L. Marvin. When the 1880 census was compiled, there were 422 township residents.
In the 1800s, it was estimated that seven sections of Grant Township were covered by Rice Lake, the largest body of water in Newaygo County. With the swamplands that surrounded it, Rice Lake occupied one-fourth of the township. During the 1920s and 30s, the lake was drained, leaving a rich, mucky soil perfect for producing a large percentage of the onions, carrots and celery that stock grocery stores across the Midwest.
For many years, the Grant Township Board met in the one-room Pleasant Valley School. In 1996, the old school was replaced by a new township hall.
